Takako Saito. You and Me

November 12 – February 18, 2018

Porträt Takako Saito Takako Saito, November 2017. Extra Do it Yourself Shop You + Me, 1994. Exhibition view MGK Siegen. Start diashow

Artist Takako Saito has become well-known for her poetic, scurrilous performances, which she realizes in interplay with accomplices or with the public. Equally unmistakable are her carefully worked object-boxes with miniatures, produced since the 1960s, as well as the numerous ›free‹ chess games. Playing games, trying things out, taking them away: the public's involvement is characteristic of many of her do-it-yourself objects and shops with red and white striped awnings. They display wooden boxes, book-objects, games, and works made with paper.

Saito's interest lies in the object and everyday world, to which she adds her own artistic expression by means of interventions or small actions. Here, the diversity and variety of her life's work is set out impressively for the first time.

Takako Saito (*1929 in Sabae, Japan) joined the Fluxus movement in New York during the 1960s. “Fluxus” is the Latin term for “flowing” or “transient”. In art, Fluxus describes an attitude that sought to break conventional ways of thinking and seeing and propagated a fluid transition between art and life. Important colleagues for Saito here included the Fluxus founder George Maciunas, Robert Filliou and George Brecht.

Takako Saito creates performances for every exhibition. In the Museum für Gegenwartskunst Siegen she performed “Sound Clothing Music” and “Airplane Music” at the opening.  The short film on Youtube provides some insight into these actions.

Further performances by Takako Saito in 2018: At the symposium on Saturday, 13.01.2018 / 4 pm: “Head Dice Game” and at the closing event on Sunday, 18.02.2018 / 5.15 pm:  “Hand Music” and “Performance with a Harp”

The exhbition will travel to the Spoerri Exhibition Hall, at Hadersdorf am Kamp, Austria and to the Musée d'art contemporain de Bordeaux (CAPC).
