Cy Twombly

Photographs 1951-2010

July 17 − October 30, 2011

Cy Twombly’s photographic works were a late discovery. The painter, who became famous with his gestures in drawing and writing, was an extraordinarily productive photographer since his time as a student. Only in the last few years of his life did he make his photographic artwork public.

This exhibition featured still lifes, flower studies, and studio shots. Exceedingly interesting were the photographic studies of his own paintings and sculptures. They threw a singular light on the interpretation of these pieces and the artist’s own process of self-reflection in creating his works. The exhibition showed 130 previously unreleased photographies.

Cy Twombly was awarded the seventh Rubens Prize of the City of Siegen in the year 1987. Works of his that are part of the Lambrecht-Schadeberg Collection (paintings, photographs, sculptures, graphics) were integrated into the exhibition.
