Sigmar Polke and the 1970s

November 4, 2018 - March 10, 2019

Sigmar Polke, Ohne Titel (à deux I), 1975 Sigmar Polke, Ohne Titel (à deux I), 1975 The Lambrecht-Schadeberg Collection / Winners of the Rubens Prize of the City of Siegen

The new acquisition for the Lambrecht-Schadeberg Collection of an extensive group of photos, “Von Willich aus. Fotografien 1973-1978” by Sigmar Polke forms the starting point to this presentation. Among the total of 85 photos are many portraits of the artist as well as his partner at the time, Katharina Steffen, who received the photos from him as a personal gift. Domestic scenes from Willich, where Polke lived in a commune on the farm, Gaspelshof, are included, as well as shots from Zurich, Katharina Steffen's home, or snapshots dating from a holiday together on Sicily. In addition, it is possible to see photos depicting the artistic and social environment: in Zurich, for example, Polke captured actions by Frauen-Rakete in 1976, in Bern he took pictures in Toni Gerber's gallery.

The illustrative motifs thus reflect not only the zeitgeist but also the network in which Polke operated. To the same extent, however, they are products artistically reflecting on this attitude, realized using experimental photographic techniques.

In addition to the group of photos from the Lambrecht-Schadeberg Collection, additional photos in the possession of Katharina Steffen will be shown. These will be supplemented with works by other artists from Polke's closer circle and his extended network in Düsseldorf/Willich, Zurich and Bern.
